The project

The West Mamprusi District has inadequate access to modern technology and the Internet.  Residents do not own computers and rely on public facilities outside of the community to access the Internet, produce documents, and apply for higher education.  The Walewale Computer Lab aims to provide those benefits along with promoting improved awareness of the outside world through technology.

An important target audience for this project are local middle school students and teachers.  The Ghanaian government has made information communication and technology a core subject in the school curriculum.  Students are required to pass an exam in it in order to matriculate into high school.  However, none of the 48 middle schools in West Mamprusi that collectively educate over thousand five-hundred students own a single computer!  The consequences of dropping out of school are severe, and such individuals are forced to become farmers or local craftsmen, thereby remaining trapped in poverty.

The Walewale Computer Lab contains thirty-one computers along with providing Internet and printing services.  It offers training to both students, teachers and adults in the district.  When not in use for educational purposes the facility operates as the town’s Internet café, which allows it to generate the necessary income to remain self-sustainable. The center has also recently partnered with the Ghana Education Service and Educators International (an NGO) based in UK in the establishment of I.C.T centers in all twelve circuits of the West Mamprusi Education Division. This project is managed and supervised by the C.E.O of Walewale Computer Lab.
